3. Conference: "Rebellion and Protest from Maribor to Taksim. Social Movements in the Balkans", University of Graz, 12-14 December 2013

The goal of the conference is to shed light on recent social movements in the Balkans. By exploring the protests in a regional and broader comparative perspective, the conference seeks to place the individual protests into a large context and highlight both connections between different social movements and to also identify similar and varying dynamics of protest and government responses. By focusing on social movements in post-Communist Southeastern Europe, as well as Greece and Turkey, the conference seeks to overcome a strong division in research on different regions within Southeastern Europe.

8. Call for Papers: "Jewish and Christian Reception(s) of Muslim Theology", Journal "Intellectual History of the Islamicate World"

The Volume 2 (eds. Sabine Schmidtke, Gregor Schwarb) will address phenomena of reciprocity between Muslims, Christians and Jews in the field of kalām. It is well known that especially Jewish thinkers increasingly adopted Muslim (and Christian) rational theology from the 10th century onwards (esp. Muʿtazilite theology), and a similar phenomenon can be observed in 13th and 14th century Coptic theological writings that were under the influence of Ashʿarite (Ghazālī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī) and Jewish thinkers (Maimonides). Contributions are invited that will address new texts, aspects and issues within this intellectual “whirlpool” of kalām.

Deadline: 15 September 2013. Information
