The Political Leader: Abu Bakr as a Pattern.
There is a widespread
notion in the West that the world lacks
real leadership since the present leadership is merely a usual type of
administrative leadership. Mohammed Salhuddin a leading columnist of Al-Madina
newspaper believes that the situation in the Arab and Islamic World is more so.
The method by which leaders are chosen
or come to usurp power is very disappointing or even saddening.
After the Prophet’s death
(P.B.U.H), a group of Madenese (al-Ansar) gathered in Sagifat Bani Sa’idah to
choose a leader amongst themselves. The news reached some of the Makkans (al-
Muhajirun) who rushed to the site to participate in the discussion of this
vital issue. The meeting resulted in the nomination of Abu Bakr. The next day
the rest of Al-Madina people unanimously accepted the nomination, therefore Abu
Bakr was hailed the first Caliph.
Abu Bakr in his inaugural
speech stated his program and the qualities he foresees that a leader should
possess. First he was chosen a leader though he did not look forward to be a leader. Second the
leader should not think himself to be
the best person that emphasizes the humble nature of the head of the state. Third the nation has
the right to monitor the work of its leader. Fourth the government is an
egalitarian as there is no difference between the strong or the weak when it
comes to the rights of each.
When Abu bakr assumed power
he intended to continue with his private business. However, Umar and other
prominent persons thought that he should devote all his time to the job
providing he is given a salary agreed upon by the people and not to live in
exravagance.
Though Abu Bakr was known
to be a lenient person, he proved to be so strong and even very tough in
controlling the crisis that erupted after the death of the Prophet
(p.bu.h.)
This research will not be
limited to Islamic sourses or perspective, it shall also look into English
Political Science literature for the qualities of the political leadership.
