1. International Conference: "Apocalyptic Otherness: ‘They are Gog and Magog, gathered together for Battle’. Scyths, Arabs, or the US Army?", FAU, Erlangen, 14-16 February 2018

Outstanding scholars will treat the biblical origins of the Gog-and-Magog motif, its reception in early Christian literature and in the medieval exegesis as well as its further literary development in Europe. This history of reception will be compared with the development of this apocalyptic motif in oriental and Islamic traditions. 3. Workshop: “Diaspora Dilemmas: Political Participation in Contested Environments”, King’s College, London, 13 April 2018


The aim of this workshop has multiple scholarly objectives: firstly, to examine the comparative dimension of diaspora political participation across a range of post-conflict scenarios from Asia to the Balkans and the Middle East, with a focus on examining voting patterns and electoral participation; secondly, to analyse diasporas’ effectiveness as a political actor on the supranational stage; and finally, to seek answers for the political integration of diaspora communities on host state politics and consequential interstate relations.

4. Conference: “Islam in Global Africa”, Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa (ISITA), Northwestern University, Evanston, 23-24 April 2018

This interdisciplinary conference seeks to explore the multiple dimensions of Islam in global Africa. We invite scholars to submit papers focusing on how the meaning of Islam and what it means to be African and Muslim and how it is being negotiated at the intersection of local, regional and global encounters, narratives, perceptions and exchanges.

9. Panel: "Amazigh Cinema at Large: Challenges and Hopes", during “Fifth World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES)”, Seville, 16-20 July 2018

This panel seeks to engage a discussion of cultural production across the Amazigh space and encourage a diversity of perspectives and theoretical lenses. It will also analyze Amazigh transnational identities as they are reflected in film, and develop an overview of Amazigh cinema by identifying the elements that constitute an Amazigh film.

The conference aims to discuss the variety of symbolic and institutional measures that distinguish between the religious and the non-religious (and at the same time relate the two to each other) in modern societies, and find explanations for the multiplicity of “secularities”.

14. Director of the GIGA Institute of Middle East Studies (IMES), Universität Hamburg

The successful candidate is expected to teach and conduct research in the field of contemporary history and politics in the Middle East. As Professor of the Faculty of Humanities the incumbent will have teaching obligations of one course per semester (two teaching hours per week) and examination duties. She or he

15. Post-Doc Position on "Ibn Masarra", University of Louvain, Belgium

This position (up to three years) is related to the research project: "The origin and early development of philosophy in tenth-century al-Andalus: the impact of ill-defined materials and channels of transmission". Qualification: PhD in Islamic Studies, in Middle Eastern Studies, or related fields; excellent command of Classical Arabic (the knowledge of additional languages such as ancient Greek, Latin and in particular  Hebrew is considered an advantage); etc.

The MEM Platform, in partnership with the “Chaire Moyen-Orient Méditerranée (MOM) de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure”, is organising the MEM Summer Summit: a ten-day summer programme, consisting of a Seminar and of a Forum, open to young people from Mediterranean, European, North African and Middle Eastern countries or with a proven interest in the region.

27. Summer Program in Politics and Culture: “Duke Middle East in Europe”, Berlin, 3 July - 14 August 2018

On this six-week, two-credit program, students learn to critically analyze the political debates about Muslims and Islam in Europe and about refugees and immigrants from the Middle East. We will study the impact of Turkish inhabitants and culture in Germany in order to examine the shifting political landscape of Turkish-German identities and between Europe and the Middle East. The Arab experience in Europe will also be explored from the vantage point of North African communities as well as more recent arrivals from Syria and the Middle East.
