Dear Dr. Motabbagani,
It is with great
pleasure that we invite you to participate in a six-part series,
"Censorship and the National Interest," sponsored by the Center for
Near Eastern Studies at New York University. We extend our invitation to
participate in the segment on the Arabian Peninsula scheduled for Tuesday,
February 27,
1996.
The other panelists will
be Sheila Carapico, director of the American institute of Yemeni Studies at the
University of Richmond; and Liesl Graz, a reporter for The Economist and author
of two books on political affairs in the Arabian peninsula.
"Censorship and the National
Interest" is a six-part series focusing on issues and applications of censorship
in television, newspaper and other cultural media. Each installment will
address a different society or region, examining how censorship as in the
"national interest" speaks to the construction of national
identity/ideology. The series will also consider how the practice has been
affected by the spread of direct broadcasting by satellite and other means of
transmitting information beyond state lines.
We look forward to
having you join us for the panel.
Sincerely,
Alison Feldman
Associate Director
